Next comes Paddington (2014)
Synopsis
Paddington returns to Peru to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who now lives at the Bears Retirement House. With the Brown family in tow, an exciting adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey. The director of the previous two films, Paul King, decided not to direct this installment. However, he pitched the idea of this third film and participated as an executive producer. ‘Paddington in Peru (2024)’ isn’t as good as ‘Paddington 2 (2017)’, but it’s not as big of a failure as some initial reactions have led me to believe.

For the most part, it remains a fun and delightfully polite experience, as enjoyable as it is lively. While the more standard adventure narrative is less idiosyncratic than the vignette approach of the first two films, it still works quite well in this context and allows its lovable characters to remain charming even when subjected to the classic sequel of being removed from its habitat natural. There are many funny moments and the film is personal from the first frame. It’s a really enjoyable movie and sometimes that’s all you need. What it lacks compared to its predecessors is a strong emotional core.
Despite its few issues, there’s still more than enough to like about the film
Although a few of its moments are moving, the piece isn’t particularly moving and won’t get the tear ducts going. Also, some of his character work is pretty shallow and, as my brother pointed out, almost seems like an obligatory afterthought. The overall narrative is fairly conventional and follows a specific formula almost to the letter. It’s pretty predictable and feels relatively generic, almost as if it was adapted for Paddington after its basic beats had already been written. Its lovable cast is as strong as ever, with some charming newcomers (Antonio Banderas and Olivia Coleman) happily chewing up the scenery when needed.
It’s a very fun time
The special effects are consistently good, bringing the eponymous bear believably to life in such a way that it’s strange to think he’s never in the same space as the other characters. When she naturally doesn’t appear on the red carpet, it seems like someone is missing. The film is light and lively; It really flies and is generally a lot of fun. It’s full of gags, both visual and dialogue, and action scenes and antics that make you lose your balance. All in all, this is a perfectly respectable addition to their series that is well made and enjoyable from start to finish.
It is much better than many similar films
It’s a shame that Paddington 2 (2017) follows, as it’s arguably the best (or at least most appealing) film of all time, because this really is a great family film. If you’re expecting the best movie of all time (again) or even the second best movie of all time, you’re obviously going to be disappointed. Still, it’s a solid effort that’s charming and entertaining in almost every scene. If you’re not expecting a miracle, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
